12 Best U.S. Cities to Visit in August

By Wendy Davis · Last updated on July 1, 2025

Ready to swap your usual routine for a summer adventure? August in the US means blue skies, late sunsets, and lots of exciting music festivals in every city. A city escape can give you just the right mix of excitement and relaxation before the season winds down.

You’ll find that some cities in America are at their absolute best in August. From seaside getaways to big cities with loads of cultural events on, these places will get you inspired for your next trip. So grab your shades and get ready for some summer fun!

Seattle, Washington

Seattle

It’s no secret that Seattle is a rainy city, which is why August is so special. The clouds start to clear and the sun finally comes out. It’s rare to see Mount Rainier from the city, but in August she pops against the blue sky in the background.

Since the weather is so nice, August is the best time of year to go on a sailboat tour across Elliott Bay. Once you’re done head to Gas Works Park and catch the sunset.

Towards the end of the month the city comes to life for three days for Bumbershoot, a frenzy of comedy shows, food and craft markets, and indie gigs that take over downtown.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco

Locals lovingly call August in San Francisco ‘Fogust’. But don’t worry, the fog doesn’t stick around for long. If you do catch San Francisco on a foggy August morning, then you should walk over Golden Gate bridge and watch as the clouds lift and the city reveals itself!

After, go on a tour to the old Alcatraz prison or picnic among the city’s bison in Golden Gate Park. It can be pretty scary being so close to these huge animals, but they’re pretty tame so don’t panic.

If you’re there at the start of August you can catch Outside Lands, a festival with epic headliner sets. Drinking craft brews and truffle fries is traditional whilst the festival is on.

Denver, Colorado

Denver

Perched a mile high, Denver’s August days are bright and rain-free. It’s the perfect time of year to get up early and catch the sunrise at City Park, where you can enjoy the city skyline and the Rockies lit up in hues of pink.

Since the skies are blue it’s a great chance to rent a bike and go brewery hopping through RiNo’s graffitied streets with friends.

No summer would be complete without catching a live gig at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, there’s nothing like listening to your favorite songs as they echo off ancient sandstone.

Portland, Maine

Portland

If you’ve been dreaming of salty breezes and lobster-roll lunches then Portland is the place to be. In August the weather is hot, but you’re cooled by the breeze coming off the Atlantic.

Lose yourself among the Old Port’s red-brick warehouses and indie boutiques on a sunny day, or hop on a ferry to Peaks Island which is covered in bike paths.

Drive to the edge of the city and spend a dreamy sunset by the Portland Head Light, which is arguably New England’s most photographed lighthouse. It’s super relaxing watching the waves roll in and sailboats glide past.

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence

Providence is packed with sunshine in August and the whole city feels alive. Spend your mornings lazily wandering around College Hill’s quirky bookstores or exploring the shops along the city’s 2.4-mile-long and scenic Riverwalk.

In the warmer months, the riverfront is transformed about twice a month with WaterFire celebrations. These two unlikely elements meet, and dozens of boats float along the water full of tourists who want to get up close with the floating fire sculptures. There’s often live music and there are always food stalls too.

Small but full of spirit, Providence proves that good things really do come in small packages.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach

If your happy place involves sun, the beach, and live funk bands then put Virginia Beach at the top of your bucket list. August is a popular time to come as it’s hot and sunny, the perfect beach weather.

Luckily there’s always a slight Atlantic breeze to keep you from breaking into a sweat. As you walk along the 3-mile-long boardwalk lined with ice cream stands, always keep an eye on the ocean. You might be lucky enough to spot dolphins swimming past!

Toward the end of the month, the Funk Fest Beach Party takes over the city. You can boogie on the sand just meters away from the ocean.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is like a summer camp for grown-ups, without the mosquitos and with Victorian architecture thrown in. One thing we love about it is that cars are banned, so it’s always quiet and peaceful.

August temperatures are hot but not too hot, and there are blue skies most of the month. Locals and visitors glide around on rollerblades or jump into horse-drawn carriages, the lake breezes keeping everyone cool.

You can’t leave without taking some pictures at Arch Rock and visiting Fort Mackinac. But that’s not all, in mid-August the island holds its Fudge Festival, and there are always free samples on offer.

Charleston, West Virginia

Charleston

Looking for a summer holiday packed with mountain scenery and live music events? Then Charleston will hit the spot. In August the days are warm and it gets balmy in the evenings. The city is framed by the Kanawha River, which is extra pretty this time of year.

Every Friday, Live on the Levee turns the riverfront into a free concert lounge, bringing the downtown area to life with soulful bluegrass riffs that echo through the city streets.

Of course, whilst you’re in Charleston you just have to go on a Capitol tour, the 23-karat dome is extra sparkly when the sun is out.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

Provincetown

With its sun-kissed dunes, rainbow flags, and refreshing sea air – Provincetown is extra delightful in August. Start your mornings with a barefoot walk along Herring Cove. Keep your eye on the sea as a curious seal is never far from the shore.

But you won’t have long to yourself, by early afternoon Commercial Street is full of color during the August Carnival Week. Think outrageous costumes, drag shows, and a parade full of confetti bombs.

When you need a moment to gather your thoughts, climb the Pilgrim Monument that boats gorgeous Cape Cod views, or join a whale-watching cruise and get to know the local humpback whales!

Early in the morning before the heat is in full swing, ride the charming and old-fashioned streetcar.

August in Cape May feels like stepping into a postcard. This Victorian beach town on New Jersey’s southern tip is extra charming in summer when the sun is shining and you can feel the sea breeze in your hair.
