Introduction

Long one of Africa’s most popular destinations, Tanzania boasts a staggering array of landscapes, scenery and nature with lots of incredible wildlife on show. Aside from going on unforgettable safaris in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, visitors can climb up the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro, lounge on Zanzibar’s pearly white beaches or delve into its rich history, culture and heritage.

The largest country in all East Africa, Tanzania is surrounded by Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and the DRC. While the warm and inviting waters of the sparkling Indian Ocean lie along its eastern shore and around the Zanzibari archipelago, the enormous lakes Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa dot its western realms. Whereas the north is very mountainous and heavily forested, the center consists of plains and farms with beaches and islands lining the coast.

Most people use the largest and liveliest city of Dar Es Salaam as a gateway to the country’s untold riches. But its colorful and chaotic markets, scattering of historic sites and intoxicating mix of cultures make a longer stay well worthwhile. After Dar, both Arusha and Moshi are the main cities that tourists stop by, largely due to their setting along the ever-popular Northern Safari Circuit.

From here, you can arrange to go on epic safaris around the Serengeti, Arusha and Tarangire national parks. In the gigantic Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you can see lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and rhinos. In addition, hardy adventurers can attempt to scale the massive Mount Meru and majestic Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s loftiest summit.

While both Ruaha and Mikumi national park in the south also attract some safari-goers, most people then prefer to enjoy Zanzibar’s beautiful beaches and tantalizing turquoise waters after they’ve seen the north of the country. Besides basking in its stunning scenery, you can also explore its charming capital Stone Town which exhibits a mesmerizing mix of African, Indian and Arab influences.
