12 Best European Cities to Visit in July

By Natascha Taylor · Last updated on May 29, 2025

Europe is wonderful year-round, but there is something particularly magical about the continent in July. Cities burst into life with festivals, open-air concerts, and sunny evenings that can stretch well past your usual bedtime. As the flowers bloom and temperatures rise, locals emerge from their winter hibernation with a refreshed energy that feels almost contagious.

Whether you’re following the midnight sun in Northern Europe or the verdant green Alps in central Europe. Or if golden Mediterranean beaches call your name, these are twelve of the best cities to visit during the month of July:

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm

For much of the year, Stockholm sits in the shadow of winter darkness. July is one of the city’s sunniest months—so sunny, in fact, that they call it the land of the midnight sun. The city comes alive during Midsummer, one of Sweden’s most cherished summer traditions. Locals dance around maypoles and sing traditional songs. It’s a joyful festival that every seasoned traveler should experience at least once in their lives.

Beyond Midsummer, the city has a striking blend of modernity and history. You can spend one hour exploring the cobblestone streets of Gamle Stan and the next having a boutique coffee in a glass-built building.

Aveiro, Portugal

Aveiro

Aveiro is often called the ‘Venice of Portugal’ because of its countless canals that crisscross the city. Colorful moliceiro boats, historic vessels once used to harvest seaweed and fish, cruise the canals throughout the summer months. For a touch of history, visit the Museu de Aveiro. This museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich religious history and contemporary culture.

The town is well connected by train, making it easy to reach from Porto or Lisbon, two of the country’s biggest cities. It’s budget-friendly and mostly walkable, making it a solid summer vacation destination for those watching their spending.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen

Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen, is an outdoor lover’s dream during July. The Danish concept of ‘friluftsliv’, or ‘living in the free air’, is in full swing. People spend their free time between parks, beaches, canals, and outdoor cafes, soaking up every bit of sunshine that they can. Biking is the preferred mode of transport here, which adds a level of activity to any trip.

A highlight is Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. It’s known for being a major inspiration for Hans Christian Andersen, the author of The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid. With its nostalgic ambiance, it’s easy to see why.

Monaco, Monaco

Monaco

Despite being the second smallest country in the world, Monaco packs a significant punch when it comes to luxury and glamour. If these words spark excitement within you, this could be the best place to visit in July. The city-state buzzes with events, from lavish yacht shows to car events to open-air concerts like the Monte-Carlo Summer Festival. The Monte Carlo Casino is an obvious highlight worth experiencing, even if you’re not into gambling.

Monaco is just a short train ride away from Nice in France, along the French Riviera. This entire coastline, home to Cannes and Saint Tropez, is particularly well known for its high-end lifestyle. That said, there are always ways to travel on a budget.

Split, Croatia

Split

Croatia has recently been at the forefront of Adriatic headlines, coming up close behind the Greek Isles as a tourist hotspot. Split is an ancient city that boasts as much history as it does beautiful beaches and fresh seafood. The city’s centerpiece is the Diocletian Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Roman ruins famous for being a film location for Game of Thrones.

It’s one of those cities where you can spend your days strolling the historic center and evenings lounging on a palm-lined beach with a cocktail in hand. The city also hosts the Split Festival in July – an event dedicated to Croatian pop music.

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg

Most people know Salzburg for being the birthplace of the famous musician Mozart. While it certainly resonates with history and music fans, the city has a lot more to offer than this piece of history. Salzburg is home to exquisite baroque architecture, all set against a dramatic alpine backdrop that almost looks too good to be real.

Stroll down the Getreidegasse, the main shopping street, and visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress for stunning views of the city. The Austrian city also has incredible food and a nightlife scene that never seems to sleep, particularly in July.

Bilbao, Spain

Bilbao

Bilbao is a busy city tucked away in Spain’s Basque Country. It offers a seamless blend of modernity and tradition. For example, the striking modern architecture of the Guggenheim Museum contrasts with the Medieval streets and pintxo bars of Casco Viejo.

Spain in summer is a festival every day. Just a simple stroll through the city, stopping for tapas and a refreshing sangria along the way, is enough to make anyone book a trip. It’s also a lot more affordable than Madrid or Barcelona, and has just as rich a cultural vibe.

Siena, Italy

Siena

Siena is a small hilltop city in the heart of Italy’s Tuscany. It’s famous for its medieval architecture and Piazza del Campo, a large square lined with restaurants serving up the best ravioli you will ever taste. The colors of this red-tinged limestone town pop with the sunrise and sunset. This is no doubt the best time to climb the stairs of the Siena Cathedral (Duomo) for panoramic city views.

Every July, the city hosts the Palio di Siena Horse Race, an event which sees horses replace outdoor restaurant seating, racing around the city’s central piazza.

Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest

Bucharest, Romania’s capital, is a truly underrated European city. With its grand boulevards and historic belle-epoque architecture, it is often called the ‘Little Paris of the East’. In July, warm sunshine thaws the city, and locals start crowding terraces and parks.

Visit the Palace of Parliament, a massive building with a controversial history. Then head to the trendy suburb of Lipscani (or Old Town), where street art, craft beer, and second-hand book stores coexist in harmony.

Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki

You haven’t truly experienced a European summer until you’ve visited Helsinki in July. It’s another northern country where you can wander the city at midnight under near broad daylight. With nearly 24/7 sunshine, it’s no surprise the city pulsates with activity throughout the night.

The city is set on the Finnish fjords surrounded by hundreds of islands. So, it has plenty of beaches and docks where you can cool off on a hot July day. It’s clean, peaceful, and surprisingly beautiful. A big plus is that it’s primarily a destination for Scandinavian tourists, with most foreigners heading to more cliché Mediterranean cities.

Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw

Warsaw is one of those cities with a dramatic stigma attached to it. It was a heavy center of attack during World War II. And while it’s important to visit the necessary sites and memorials, this city has a lot more to offer than its dark history.

The Old Town, called Stare Miasto, has been meticulously rebuilt after the war, with colorful facades and charming alleyways. Stop and eat traditional pierogi in the Praga District, a gritty, rugged part of town with street art, trendy bars, and affordable restaurants.

Rotterdam, Netherlands

Rotterdam

Most of the Netherlands’ tourists center around Amsterdam. Consider Rotterdam the capital’s cooler sibling. It’s just a short train ride away, yet it feels totally unique. The city was completely destroyed by bombs during World War II and has since rebuilt itself. Today, it boasts some of the most interesting architecture on the continent. Just wander past the Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus Museum House) for an idea of what I mean.

In July, the city comes alive with colorful pot plants and effortlessly cool canal-side cafes. After a long winter, the city becomes a hotspot for nightlife and outdoor festivals, attracting a young and vibrant crowd.
