“I’d Book a Trip Just for This” — Travelers Share Their Best Travel Experiences Ever

By Mike Kaplan · Last updated on May 3, 2026

There’s a difference between a good trip… and that one moment you keep bringing up. Not the hotel. Not the itinerary. Just the thing that made you go — yeah, this was it.

This comes from a Reddit thread where people were asked a simple question: what’s the best actual travel experience you’ve had?

Not where you went — what happened.

And once people started answering, it got very specific, very quickly.

Sailing Through Glowing Water Between Tonga and Fiji

Bioluminescence blue glow

This is one of those answers that just gets dropped into the thread like it’s normal.

They were sailing at night between Tonga and Fiji.

“Sailing between Tonga and Fiji at night with bioluminescent plankton glowing in the water… and the Milky Way overhead.”

They even mentioned turning off the lights for a bit just to take it in.

“No sound and no light pollution (we switched off the lights for a few minutes to admire).”

Not a lot to add to that.

Chasing the Northern Lights in Swedish Lapland

Northern Lights

One person didn’t just see the northern lights — they chased them for three days around Kiruna and Abisko.

“It wasn’t just the breathtaking aurora – it was the adventure of running after them and watching them bursting in the sky at the most surreal places!”

It wasn’t exactly comfortable either.

They ended up on frozen lakes and random stops outside the city, standing around fires with snacks while the cold hit properly:

“A random spot at the far corner of the city where they built a small fire… ginger biscuits and lingonberry tea as the -17°C wind slapped our faces.”

That’s the part they remember.

A Weekend at the George V in Paris

George V in Paris

Some answers in the thread are all about adventure.

This one is just… everything working perfectly.

A three-day stay at the Four Seasons George V in Paris.

“Breakfast on the balcony… spa treatments… dinner at Michelin star restaurants”

Then a private wine cellar tour. Opera tickets better than expected.

It reads less like a trip and more like a very well-executed plan.

Five Days in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Ecuadorian Amazon

This one starts before you even get there.

A small plane into the jungle, then a canoe ride to an ecolodge run by the Achuar.

“one-hour flight in a small plane… then canoe about 30 minutes downriver”

After that, it’s just days of hiking, canoeing, and spotting wildlife everywhere.

The kind of experience where you stop checking your phone because there’s no point.

Sleeping Under the Stars in Kenya

Illuminated tents on Kilimajaro

Some responses are long.

This one isn’t.

“Sleeping in the star beds in Kenya… pitch black at night, millions of stars, night sounds in the bush.”

That’s the whole thing.

A Surprise Birthday in the Masai Mara

Masai Mara

One person shared this from a family trip.

They were staying at a camp in the Masai Mara when the staff surprised their kids after dinner.

“It wasn’t just one song… it was a proper party with jumping and everything.”

You can tell from the way it’s written — that wasn’t expected.

Sailing Around French Polynesia Without Doing Anything

Bora Bora

Another one that shows up in the thread and immediately sounds good.

Eight days on a catamaran between islands.

“we had a captain who could lead dive expeditions, and the first mate was the chef”

Every day they just found out where they were going and what they were eating.

That’s it.

Swimming With Sea Lions in the Galápagos

Galapagos Sea Lions

This one starts simple and then shifts.

They went expecting to see sea lions from a distance.

Instead:

“ended up swimming with them… they blew bubbles in my face… magical”

That escalated quickly.

White-Water Rafting… Then Hot Soup

White-Water Rafting

This one is all about the ending.

Rafting down the Ganges in the Himalayas.

Cold, rough, exhausting.

Then they got off the raft and this happened:

“greeted by staff with warm towels and hot soup”

Perfect timing.

The First View of Petra

View of Treasury in Petra

Some experiences are basically built around one moment.

This is one of them.

“Hiking through the Siq… then walking into the sunlit opening to face the Treasury. Breathtaking.”

And yeah — people in the thread still describe it exactly like that.

A Random Perfect Morning in Chicago

Millennium Park

Not everything in the thread is extreme.

One person just described walking through Millennium Park.

“felt like I was in a secret garden… a few perfect moments locked in time”

No big story.

Just one of those mornings where everything lines up for no reason.

Polar Plunge in Antarctica on New Year’s Eve

Antarctica

This one is just a very specific combination.

“I did a polar plunge in Antarctica and listened to the whales at midnight on New Year’s Eve.”

Jumping into Antarctic water is one thing.

Doing it at midnight, with whales in the background — that’s the part people remember.

The Train Ride Through Sri Lanka

Nine arches bridge

This one started as something they weren’t even looking forward to.

“I was kind of dreading it but it was fascinating and scenically beautiful.”

And then it just turned into this:

“Every station we stopped at along the way someone would come to the window and sell us a snack – we were completely stuffed by the time we got to Kandy!”

Which is a pretty good way to spend eight hours.

A Night on Mont Saint-Michel

Night on Mont Saint-Michel

This one only works because of the timing.

They stayed overnight on Mont Saint-Michel — after the crowds leave.

“Spent a night on Mont Saint-Michel… there were only about 25 visitors on the whole island.”

Same place everyone visits during the day — just completely different once it empties out.

Sleeping in a Treehouse in the South African Bush

Treehouse

This one sounds like something out of a documentary.

A treehouse, out in the bush, nothing around.

“Staying in a treehouse in the South African bush and falling asleep to jackals and elephants below.”

You’re just… up there. Listening to everything move around in the dark.
