Dreaming of a beach getaway? You don’t have to jump on a plane to some far-off island to find scenery that feels almost unreal. Honestly, some American beaches have such distinct beauty and atmosphere, you’ll swear you’re in a dream.
Think calm turquoise waters, dramatic forested shores, or stretches of powdery white sand—these aren’t your run-of-the-mill beaches. If you want a trip with a little more magic, a few places really stand out.
9. Bethel Beach, Virginia
Surrounded by a preserve, Bethel Beach is an unspoiled haven waiting for your footsteps. You won’t find much in the way of amenities here as the surrounding habitat is protected, but what it lacks in picnic areas it makes up for in tranquility.
The narrow speck of coastline has the Atlantic on one side and rolling dunes on the other. The ocean breeze that rolls through ensures the dunes consistently shifts shape.
Along the beach, you’ll find access points to beautiful lagoons, back bays, and narrow channels. The preserve is home to almost 200 species of local and migratory bird species, giving you plenty to see and do beyond the regular beach experience.
8. Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii

The archipelago state of Hawaii has dozens of mind-boggling beach experiences, but the one to be had at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve may just be the most unique. The bay was formed in prehistoric times and stands upon an ancient volcanic crater.
On either side of the bay, the land juts out, protecting the water and creating an idyllic environment. Hanauma Bay is a spot for swimmers. With little swell, you’ll be able to experience the impeccable underwater world that thrives with its protected status.
Travelers will need to pay a fee to enter the preserve and also watch a video about the park. This will help you appreciate the vibrant nature beneath the surface and the immense colors that envelope the reefs and marine life.
7. Shi Shi Beach, Washington

Shi Shi Beach is within the Olympic National Park. The landscape is out of this world; it has rugged sea stacks that stick out of the ocean and perfectly contrast the sandy shoreline.
There are tide pools where you can search for crabs and other mysterious and funny looking marine wildlife. Your day on Shi Shi Beach will be a little different, it’s not the sort of place you come to sunbathe. But it is great for a scenic walk!
The beach is halfway along the 6.7 mile long Shi Shi Beach Trail, a stunning oceanfront and forest trail in Olympic National Park – so you can trek there and make the most of your time here.
6. Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, South Carolina

Around the turn of the 20th century, Jekyll Island was exclusively the abode of the rich. While that may no longer be the case, you can see what drew the wealthy crowd to the island at the pristine Driftwood Beach.
Jekyll Island features dozens of miles of soft white sand beaches that fringe upon historic buildings and a wilderness that continues to reclaim land. But for photographers and romantics, all roads point to Driftwood Beach.
Because of erosion, glistening sand can’t grip the trees, leaving them to be strewn across the landscape like abandoned toys. Over time, the wind, rain and salt spray have bleached them, creating stunning scenery. Beachgoers come here to take in the veritable tranquility, unique photography, and the occasional quiet wedding.
5. Natural Bridges State Beach, California

Located in a lovely state park just outside of Santa Cruz, the beach has loads of wildlife on show. Many people come here to watch the spectacular monarch butterfly migration which takes place every year when thousands upon thousands of them flutter their way through the park.
Well worth a visit, the desolate and unspoiled appearance of Natural Bridges State Park will make you feel like you’re a million miles away from civilization, so is ideal for people looking to immerse themselves in nature.
4. Bowman’s Beach, Florida
Stretching along the west coast of Sanibel Island, Bowman’s Beach is delightfully undeveloped in comparison with most of the other beaches in Florida, making it ideal for people looking for a quiet getaway.
There is a very untouched feel about the place; consequently, you won’t find a hotel in sight. The main thing to do here is to enjoy the incredible scenery and visit some of the pristine nature parks that lie nearby.
Mainly popular amongst families, birdwatchers and shell collectors, Sanibel Island and its stupendous natural sights is located not too far from Fort Meyers if you ever feel the need to enjoy the perks of city life for a bit.
3. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan

Featuring 60 miles of impeccable coast on the edge of Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the most spectacular locations in the United States. So it belongs at number one on our list of Michigan’s top beaches.
The blue waters of the lakeshore are the kinds of colors usually reserved for the Caribbean. But you can find them right here. On a beautiful, sunny day, Sleeping Bear Dunes offers calm swimming conditions and soft white sand that will soon become your favorite mattress.
From your spot on the sand, you’ll be able to look out upon the lake towards the distant Manitou Islands. After sunbathing and swimming, check out the dunes that reach enormous heights of up to 450 feet. Not to mention, the park’s epic hiking and biking trails.
2. Anini Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

If there’s one word to sum up Anini Beach, it would be relaxing. The spot is a popular choice among those staying in the nearby resort town of Princeville and is enveloped in coral reefs leading to picturesque and calm swimming.
The water remains shallow for some time as you venture away from the beach. This helps to overcome the lack of lifeguards. But those comfortable diving into the deep end can head further out to explore the gorgeous Anini Reef. Here, snorkelers and scuba divers converge on an exquisite spot, one worthy of its own spot in an art gallery.
1. Arcadia Beach State Recreation Area, Oregon
Set near arguably the best beach in Oregon, Arcadia Beach State Recreation Area is often overlooked. But if you have time to do both, you’ll find Arcadia to be a pleasant alternative to Cannon Beach and for you, it may even be better.
Arcadia Beach has golden sand, typical of the Oregon Coast. But what helps to separate it from others (aside from its tranquility) is its waterfall. A walk along the beach will reveal this natural landmark, where thin veils of water drop over rocky outcrops.
Your beach walking adventure continues as beach caves unveil themselves while the north and southern ends of Arcadia are two points, both fitted with beautiful tide pools.
