With fabulous beaches, ideal climate, low-crime status and outstanding family attractions, it is no wonder that San Diego is a popular tourist destination. Located in southern California just north of the Mexican border, San Diego is a large coastal city with a small town atmosphere.
San Diego was established as California’s first Spanish mission in 1769, and visitors today can see some of the city’s preserved buildings in the Old Town historic district. The modern downtown pulses with shopping, dining and entertainment as well as points of interests like the San Diego Maritime Museum, which houses a collection of sailing ships including the world’s oldest active one, the Star of India. Other museums display the city’s natural history, art and relationship with the US Navy.
The most popular attraction in San Diego is America’s premier zoo, which is located in Balboa Park with flowering gardens and Spanish architecture. The city is home to other family attractions like SeaWorld San Diego and the Birch Aquarium. Another tourist magnet, San Diego’s stunning coastline, offers miles of fantastic beaches featuring an array of fun activities like swimming, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, scuba diving, whale-watching and seal-spotting. Some of the most popular beaches like La Jolla, Mission and Pacific Beaches have restaurants and shops, while Point Loma and Ocean Beach offer a more quiet setting.
Sports lovers can watch the San Diego Padres hit a home run at PETCO Park or tour the San Diego Chargers’ home at Qualcomm Stadium, the host of previous NFL Super Bowl Championships. State-of-the-art theaters, opera houses and a large number of breweries, bars and clubs provide an animated nightlife in San Diego.
