Key West, an island at the southern end of the Florida Keys, is a major tourist destination in the Sunshine State. In fact, many people come to see the concrete buoy at South and Whitehead streets that supposedly marks the southernmost point in the contiguous United States; it’s not, but that point is on Navy land and closed to civilians. Key West is a stop for cruise ships as well as other visitors who come to walk the famous Duval Street, the Historic District, Fort Zachary Taylor, the landmark lighthouse and the house where author Ernest Hemingway lived in the 1930s. FYI: Key West is closer to Havana, Cuba, than it is to Miami. With its year-round tropical climate, it’s the only spot in the Lower 48 states that’s never had a frost or freeze.
