With 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, Fort Lauderdale is a popular tourist destination. The average temperature of 75 degrees doesn’t hurt either; this makes it popular with snowbirds from the northeast. For about 40 years in the 20th century, the city was a major spring break destination for college students. Fort Lauderdale is one of three forts named after Major William Lauderdale who fought in the Second Seminole War. The county seat of Broward County, this city of more than 160,000 souls attracts 12 million visitors annually. It is a major yachting center. The city, located on the Atlantic Ocean, has a network of canals and waterways, as well as seven miles of beaches. A popular attraction is the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District that stretches from downtown to the beach. Altogether, the area has more than 4,000 restaurants and 200 nightclubs.
