Refreshingly cool climate, stunning scenery and outdoor adventure make Boquete a favored tourist destination in Panama. Nestled in the lush green highlands of western Panama near the Costa Rica border, this cozy mountain town is well known as the country’s bread basket, abounding in coffee plantations, fruit orchards, flowers and wildlife.
Boquete’s main draws are its incredible scenery and outdoor activities. Plenty of tour operations are available here to aid tourists in visiting coffee plantations, orchards and flower farms. Guided hikes through the rainforest offer views of beautiful waterfalls and wildlife like howler monkeys and possibly the rare, colorful bird, the Resplendent Quetzal. A hike or jeep tour up the dormant Volcan Baru, Panama’s highest point, presents the opportunity to see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Other adventures available are horseback riding in the mountains, whitewater rafting, ziplining through the canopy of the Cloud Forest, soaking in hot springs, rock climbing and mountain biking.
Boquete also offers a vibrant arts and music scene with a live performance theater and the second largest jazz festival in Panama, which takes place every first weekend of March.
Because of the surrounding agriculture, Boquete is a great place to find fresh fruits and vegetables. The town has a variety of dining choices that range from pizza shops to Mexican and Italian restaurants as well as eateries featuring local dishes like deep-fried pancakes and fruit salads made with bananas, papaya and pineapple. Additionally, there are a number of bars offering drinks and live music.
