Some of America’s Most Unusual Houses Are Found in This Lakeside Town

Charlevoix Mushroom House

Set on a narrow strip of land, this waterfront town is shaped by the water that surrounds it. Charlevoix sits where Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix meet, connected by Round Lake and the Pine River channel, so the shoreline is never more than a short walk away wherever you go

Locals say “SHAR-luh-voy.” It’s a northern Michigan city with about 2,350 people, and every summer, the crowds roll in—though it never feels overwhelming. The town’s rhythm follows the drawbridge at its center. When it rises on schedule to let sailboats and cruisers drift by, traffic halts, people gather along the rails, and for a moment, everything slows down. Honestly, it’s kind of charming.

What pulls folks to Charlevoix, really, is how much fits into such a small space. You might show up for the beaches but end up wandering past storybook stone cottages, poking around downtown cafés and boutiques, or hopping the ferry to Beaver Island. Charlevoix works as its own trip or as a pit stop between Traverse City and Petoskey, and whether you’re here for two hours or two nights, you’ll find something to remember.

A Walkable Waterfront Core

Charlevoix Marina

Downtown stretches along Bridge Street, just a few short blocks between Round Lake’s marina and the Lake Michigan shore. You can walk the whole thing in under an hour, ducking into shops, bakeries, and restaurants—no need to move your car, unless you’re feeling especially ambitious.

Round Lake anchors the town’s harbor, and you can’t really miss the buzz around the marina. Boats fill the slips, and people linger at waterfront tables, watching traffic slip through the Pine River channel. The Bridge Street drawbridge rises often in summer, pausing cars and pedestrians. No one seems to mind. It’s just part of the scene.

If you walk south from the bridge, you’ll hit Michigan Beach Park in a matter of minutes. The beach runs along the shore, looking out at the Charlevoix South Pier and its lighthouse. On a calm morning, the water can look almost Caribbean blue—no exaggeration. If you’re patient, you might spot a Petoskey stone or two along the beach.

Head east from Round Lake and the upper channel will take you toward Lake Charlevoix, a 17-mile inland lake that’s great for kayaking, fishing, or a lazy afternoon cruise. The shift from busy harbor to quiet water happens fast.

You can catch the ferry to Beaver Island—the biggest island in Lake Michigan—right from the city dock. The ride’s about two hours each way, so it’s doable as a day trip or as an overnight detour if you’re up for it. There’s something about being able to walk the beach in the morning and then hop a boat to an island that makes Charlevoix’s waterfront feel way bigger than the town itself.

Signature Sights And Local Character

Charlevoix, Michigan

The Mushroom Houses are the first thing most visitors want to see. Built by architect Earl Young between the 1920s and 1950s, these stone-and-cedar homes feature swooping rooflines, boulder walls, and organic shapes that look pulled from a storybook. You’ll spot clusters along Park Avenue and near the lakeshore. Since people actually live in them, you’ll have to settle for sidewalk views or maybe join a guided walking tour if you’re curious.

If you head south of downtown, the Belvedere Club sits up on a bluff above Round Lake. Back in the 1870s, folks started coming here for the summer, and the Victorian cottages and carefully kept grounds still show that tradition. The neighborhood itself is private, but you can catch glimpses from public paths nearby—just enough to get the vibe.
