Most Americans Never Realize One of the Great Lakes’ Most Beautiful Destinations Is Here

By Mike Kaplan · Last updated on June 16, 2026

Perched on a hillside above Lake Superior, this small waterfront town is home to only about 500 year-round residents. Despite its size, it feels both like a hidden gem and a must-see destination in the upper Midwest. Visitors arrive by following Wisconsin Highway 13 north through forests and farmland until the lake suddenly comes into view and the road descends into the compact, sloping community along the shoreline.

Bayfield packs a lot into a walkable square mile. Down at the harbor, you can hop on a ferry to Madeline Island, book a boat tour through the Apostle Islands, or just hang out at the city dock and watch sailboats drift across the water. Berry farms and orchards surround the peninsula, and the small downtown has enough cafés, galleries, and local shops to keep you busy for a laid-back afternoon.

If you’re looking at lake towns in northern Wisconsin or thinking about a scenic detour along the South Shore, Bayfield deserves a stop. It’s both a destination and a practical base—great for a weekend of kayaking, a fall drive through apple country, or just a quick overnight if you’re circling the lake.

Historic Downtown Character

Flower garden in Bayfield

Downtown Bayfield feels small in a good way. The main stretch runs just a few blocks along the hillside, above the harbor, with brick and clapboard buildings from the city’s heyday between 1880 and 1910. Bayfield first appeared on the map in 1856 as a lumber and fishing port, and the old Great Lakes ambition still shows in the architecture.

Now, these buildings house independent shops, a bookstore, a handful of art galleries, and restaurants serving whitefish caught right below. The vibe is slow and easy. You can walk the whole commercial district in maybe ten minutes, passing street-level cafés that look out over Lake Superior.

The Bayfield Heritage Association offers guided walking tours from June through October. Their 90-minute Historic Downtown Tour covers a half-mile loop, focusing on the settlement era, with vintage photos and costumed guides adding details you won’t get just by looking at the buildings. There’s also a newer Strange and Supernatural Tour that takes a more offbeat approach to the same streets.

Gateway To The Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands

Bayfield, honestly, is where you get to the Apostle Islands. The city dock launches the Apostle Islands Cruise Service, which runs narrated boat tours weaving through the 22-island archipelago that forms the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The Grand Tour loops around several islands, gliding past sandstone sea caves, lighthouses, and stretches of old-growth shoreline. You’ll find shorter cruises and private charters leaving from the harbor, too.

If you’d rather do your own thing, kayak outfitters in town offer guided paddles to the sea caves along the mainland and around nearby islands. Lake Superior’s mood changes fast, so if you haven’t paddled big water, a guided trip isn’t a bad idea. For Madeline Island—the biggest in the bunch and the only one with a year-round community—you’ll hop the Madeline Island Ferry at the Bayfield dock. It’s a quick crossing, maybe 25 minutes tops.

The marina setup here is pretty solid. Bayfield City Dock Marina, Apostle Islands Marina, and Pike’s Bay Marina all welcome visiting boaters with slips, fuel, and pump-out stations. Even if you’re not arriving by boat, the working harbor keeps the waterfront lively in a way that quieter lakeside towns just can’t match.

Winter flips the script. When Lake Superior freezes enough, the mainland ice caves near Meyers Beach open up for walking, pulling in visitors from all over. Definitely check with the National Park Service before you drive out—access depends completely on how stable the ice is, and it’s different every year.
