Laos OverviewLaos, formally the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), is one of the poorest nations in South-East Asia. Laos has a population of about 6 million people. The Laotians are predominantly Buddhist and are very friendly and hospitable people. The country's ethnic make-up is diverse, with around 70% belonging to the largest ethnic group, the Lao. Laos's life-line is the Mekong River , which runs the length of the country and serves as a boundary with Thailand.
